BACKGROUND: Completion lymph node dissection (CLND) is the gold standard treatment for patients with a positive sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy. Considering the morbidity associated with CLND it is important to identify histological features of the primary tumor and/or of SLN metastasis that could help to spare from CLND a subset of patients who have a very low risk of non-SLN metastasis. The objective of this study is to identify patients with a very low risk to develop non-SLNs recurrences and to limit unnecessary CLND. METHODS: A retrospective long-term study of 80 melanoma patients with positive SLN, undergone CLND, was assessed to define the risk of additional metastasis in the regional nodal basin, on the basis of intranodal distribution of metastatic cells, using the micro-morphometric analysis (Starz classification). RESULTS: This study demonstrates that among the demographic and pathologic features of primary melanoma and of SLN only the Starz classification shows prognostic significance for non-SLN status (p<0.0001). This parameter was also significantly associated with disease-free survival rate (p<0.0013). CONCLUSION: The Starz classification can help to identify, among SLN positive patients, those who can have a real benefit from CLND. From the clinical point of view this easy and reliable method could lead to a significant reduction of unnecessary CLND in association with a substantial decrease in morbidity. The study results indicate that most of S1 subgroup patients might be safely spared from completion lymphatic node dissection. Furthermore, our experience demonstrated that Starz classification of SLN is a safe predictive index for patient stratification and treatment planning

The exact pathogenesis of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is still unknown. The aim of this paper was to investigate the effects of zoledronic acid and dexamethasone on the early phases of socket healing in rats subjected to tooth extractions. Thirty male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 2 groups: pharmacologically treated group (T, n=20) and non-pharmacologically treated group (C, n=10). T group rats received 0.1 mg/Kg of zoledronic acid (ZOL) and 1 mg/Kg of dexamethasone (DEX) three times a week for 10 consecutive weeks. C group rats were infused with vehicle. After 9 weeks from the first infusion, first maxillary molars were extracted in each of the rats. Quantitative macroscopic and microscopic analysis was performed to evaluate socket healing 8 days after extraction. Pharmacologically treated rats showed significant inhibition of bone remodeling. Connective tissue/alveolar bone ratio, osteoclast number and woven bone deposition were significantly reduced in group T compared to group C. Conversely, the proportion of necrotic bone was higher in group T compared to group C (0.8% and 0.3%, respectively. P=0.031). ZOL plus DEX do not cause gross effects on socket healing at a macroscopic level. Our findings confirmed that exposure to ZOL plus DEX impairs alveolar wound repair. Inhibition of osteoclastic resorption of socket walls after tooth extraction and the inability to dispose of the necrotic bone may be considered the initial steps of MRONJ onset

Probing New Physics via pp-> W+W- -> lvjj at the CERN LHC

TeV scale new Physics, e.g., Large Extra Dimensions or Models with anomalous triple vector boson couplings, can lead to excesses in various kinematic regions on the semi-leptonic productions of pp -> WW -> lvjj at the CERN LHC, which, although suffers from large QCD background compared with the pure leptonic channel, can benefit from larger production rates and the reconstructable 4-body mass Mlvjj. We study the search sensitivity through the lvjj channel at the 7TeV LHC on relevant new physics, via probing the hard tails on the reconstructed Mlvjj and the transverse momentum of W-boson (PTW), taking into account main backgrounds and including the parton shower and detector simulation effects. Our results show that with integrated luminosity of 5fb-1, the LHC can already discovery or exclude a large parameter region of the new physics, e.g., 95% CL. limit can be set on the Large Extra Dimensions with a cut-off scale up to 1.5 TeV, and the WWZ anomalous coupling down to, e.g. |\lambda_Z|~0.1. Brief results are also given for the 8TeV LHC.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 2 table

Same Sign WW Scattering Process as a Probe of Higgs Boson in pp Collision at s\sqrt{s} = 10 TeV

WW scattering is an important process to study electroweak symmetry breaking in the Standard Model at the LHC, in which the Higgs mechanism or other new physics processes must intervene to preserve the unitarity of the process below 1 TeV. This channel is expected to be one of the most sensitive to determine whether the Higgs boson exists. In this paper, the final state with two same sign Ws is studied, with a simulated sample corresponding to the integrated luminosity of 60 fb1^{-1} in pp collision at s=\sqrt{s}=10 TeV. Two observables, the invariant mass of μμ\mu\mu from W decays and the azimuthal angle difference between the two μ\mus, are utilized to distinguish the Higgs boson existence scenario from the Higgs boson absence scenario. A good signal significance for the two cases can be achieved. If we define the separation power of the analysis as the distance, in the log-likelihood plane, of pseudo-experiments outcomes in the two cases, with the total statistics expected from the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the nominal centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, the separation power will be at the level of 4 σ\sigma.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 3 table

A sensitivity study of triboson production processes to dimension-6 EFT operators at the LHC

We present the first parton-level study of anomalous effects in triboson production in both fully and semi-leptonic channels in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The sensitivity to anomalies induced by a minimal set of bosonic dimension-6 operators from the Warsaw basis is evaluated with specific analyses for each final state. A likelihood-based strategy is employed to assess the most sensitive kinematic observables per channel, where the contribution of Effective Field Theory operators is parameterized at either the linear or quadratic level. The impact of the mutual interference terms of pairs of operators on the sensitivity is also examined. This benchmark study explores the complementarity and overlap in sensitivity between different triboson measurements and paves the way for future analyses at the LHC experiments. The statistical combination of the considered final states allows setting stringent bounds on five bosonic Wilson coefficients

Abstract The calibration and monitoring system constructed for the HARP experiment scintillator-based time of flight system is described. It is based on a Nd-Yag laser with passive Q-switch and active/passive mode-locking, with a custom made laser light injection system based on a bundle of IR monomode optical fibers. A novel ultrafast InGaAs MSM photodiode, with 30 ps risetime, has been used for the laser pulse timing . The first results from the 2001–2002 data taking are presented, showing that drifts in timing down to about 70 ps can be traced

A new case of limb girdle muscular dystrophy 2g in a greek patient, founder effect and review of the literature

Limb girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD) type 2G is a rare form of muscle disease, described only in a few patients worldwide, caused by mutations in TCAP gene, encoding the protein telethonin. It is characterised by proximal limb muscle weakness associated with distal involvement of lower limbs, starting in the first or second decade of life. We describe the case of a 37-year-old woman of Greek origin, affected by disto-proximal lower limb weakness. No cardiac or respiratory involvement was detected. Muscle biopsy showed myopathic changes with type I fibre hypotrophy, cytoplasmic vacuoles, lipid overload, multiple central nuclei and fibre splittings; ultrastructural examination showed metabolic abnormalities. Next generation sequencing analysis detected a homozygous frameshift mutation in the TCAP gene (c.90_91del), previously described in one Turkish family. Immunostaining and Western blot analysis showed complete absence of telethonin. Interestingly, Single Nucleotide Polymorphism analysis of the 10 Mb genomic region containing the TCAP gene showed a shared homozygous haplotype of both the Greek and the Turkish patients, thus suggesting a possible founder effect of TCAP gene c.90_91del mutation in this part of the Mediterranean area.
